Nurturing corals @ Tung Chung

2024.05.27 - 2024.10.31

The Sustainable Lantau Office engaged the Coral Academy of the School of Life Sciences, The Chinese University of Hong Kong to undertake the feasibility study of coral conservation in the Central Waters of Hong Kong. By using micro-fragmentation and fusion technique, the Coral Academy cultures coral fragments in the nurseries, allowing them to recover and grow faster for subsequent out-planting in the wild. Through Coral Academy’s work on coral propagation, out-planting and monitoring, we wish to investigate the feasibility of coral conservation in the Central Waters and other suitable waters and provide recommendations for future conservation proposals.

Apart from learning more about the features of corals through our exhibition panels, visitors could also see the corals under propagation by the micro-fragmentation and fusion technique in the coral nursery tank set in the centre.
