Deploying Design Thinking Approach in the Design on Revitalization of Tung O Ancient Trail and Nearby Villages (2020)

Introduction

Tung O Ancient Trail (TOAT) is one of the most popular walking trails in Northwest Lantau. About 10km in length, it runs along the coastal area between Tai O and Tung Chung, passing through a few villages, i.e. San Tau, Sha Lo Wan, Sham Shek, Sham Wat, etc. The trail is rich in cultural heritage, vestige of early settlement of Hong Kong as well as treasurable natural resources. It is worth to explore the revitalization opportunity of TOAT to enhance the social and economic benefits to the local residents as well as experience of different users.

Public Engagement Activities

A design thinking project named Touch Tung O!, was launched in 2020 with a view to rebuilding a sense of identity and revitalising the area with sustainability. Different stakeholders including villagers, trail users, designers and cross-disciplinary experts were engaged in a co-creation process to better understand their needs, opinions and expectations for the future of the trail. All public engagement activities under this project are completed in the form of expeditions, co-design workshops, Scenario Building Session, Online Public Survey, Prototype Testing Session In-depth Interviews and Oral History.
